OpenAI’s Decisions API focuses on bounded application choices: developers supply a question, context, and allowed answers, then receive a probability, choice, or score. The October 22 release targets responsive software that needs a decision without a long generated response.
Those decisions can sit inside a larger agent workflow, including whether to continue, retry, or ask a question. The interface makes the output easier to integrate, but a probability remains an estimate and a structured response does not establish that the underlying judgment is correct.
For builders, the useful test is whether a small decision service improves latency and cost while meeting the application’s error tolerance. Watch calibration on real inputs and how the workflow handles uncertain or incorrect choices.
