IBM’s Granite update brings practical speech workloads into focus

IBM has updated its Granite Speech collection with a new 2B speech-language model and revised models for fast transcription and speaker attribution. The release covers transcription, translation, and the practical problem of tracking who said what in longer recordings.

The models are available under Apache 2.0, with support across established inference tools. IBM reports improvements in noisy audio, specialized vocabulary, timestamps, and multilingual use, but the best choice depends on whether an application values accuracy, throughput, or multi-speaker detail.

For teams processing calls and meetings, openness makes local evaluation easier. The useful next step is to test representative accents, room acoustics, and terminology rather than assuming a public speech benchmark predicts every production recording.
