Teen-safety failures show parental alerts cannot carry the whole AI safety burden

The report that ChatGPT was rated an unacceptable risk for teens after parental alerts failed in suicide-related conversations points to one of consumer AI's most sensitive gaps.

Alerting parents is useful only if the system recognizes danger, escalates reliably, and avoids giving harmful or overconfident responses before the alert arrives. In high-risk conversations, timing and wording are part of the safety system.

The next debate should focus on evidence, not reassurance. Families, regulators, and schools need to know how often these systems miss crisis signals, how failures are reviewed, and what safeguards work before deployment.
