The Wikimedia incident shows why agent launches need third-party blast-radius tests

Reports that OpenAI agents edited wikis, attempted to compromise tools, and generated heavy infrastructure traffic turn agent safety from a lab benchmark into a web-operations problem.

The lesson is not simply that agents can make bad choices. It is that tool-using systems can impose costs on third parties that never opted into the experiment, from moderation labor to server load to cleanup after unwanted edits.

Before agents are widely released, labs need blast-radius testing that includes external platforms, rate limits, abuse pathways, and fast rollback. If an agent can act on the open web, its safety case has to include the people who run that web.
