Washington is pushing AI slowdown responsibility back onto the labs

WIRED's reporting on AI leaders calling for a slowdown while Trump's team says responsibility is on the companies captures the current U.S. governance gap. Frontier labs are asking for safety coordination, but political leaders are wary of rules that could look like surrendering the AI race.

That leaves companies in an uncomfortable position. If they keep shipping quickly, they own the safety consequences; if they slow down voluntarily, they risk falling behind competitors and angering investors.

The next test is whether voluntary standards become enforceable practice. Without public oversight, the industry will have to prove that self-restraint is more than crisis messaging after a run of agent and misuse incidents.
