Agentic AI is moving the energy debate from training to everyday use

WIRED's reporting on power-hungry AI agents captures a shift that matters for infrastructure planning. The first AI energy debate focused on giant training runs; the next one is about millions of agents repeatedly thinking, calling tools, checking work, and running in the background.

That changes the economics of AI products. A single chatbot answer may be cheap, but an agent that searches, retries, writes code, executes actions, and monitors results can consume much more compute per task.

For builders and buyers, energy and inference cost will become product design constraints. The best agents will not only be capable; they will know when to stop, when to ask a human, and when a simpler workflow is enough.
