OpenAI’s coding-agent spend shows the real cost of AI-accelerated research

AI coding agents are often sold as productivity magic, but OpenAI’s internal usage numbers reveal the other side of the story: acceleration has a bill. When researchers spend heavily on tokens, the question becomes whether the extra experiments, debugging, and code generation produce enough research progress to justify the burn.
