The Anthropic settlement fight shows that AI copyright disputes do not end when a large number is announced. Once money is on the table, authors, publishers, agents, and platforms start arguing over who was actually harmed and who has the right to collect.
That makes AI licensing more complicated than a simple lab-versus-creator story. The publishing industry has layers of contracts and representation, and generative AI is forcing those older arrangements into a new economic fight.
For AI companies, the lesson is that settlement does not automatically buy peace. Future licensing deals will need clearer rights, clearer pay flows, and a better account of how individual creators are represented.
