The AI consciousness debate is becoming a product trust problem

Debates about AI consciousness often sound philosophical, but they increasingly affect product trust. If users believe a system is alive, suffering, loyal, or emotionally present, they may make choices the product was never designed to deserve.

The practical issue is not proving consciousness in a headline. It is making sure AI interfaces do not manipulate attachment, authority, or moral confusion. As assistants become more conversational, the boundary between useful presence and misleading personhood gets thinner.

Companies should be clear about what their systems are and are not. The more humanlike the interface becomes, the more important it is to avoid design choices that invite users to overtrust it.
